As Trinity Blood builds toward its climax, the story darkens and grows even more complicated. Episodes #17, 18, and 19 focus primarily on a plot to kill the eternal Empress because she might improve relations with the Vatican and the human world. While these machinations unfold, the affection between Ion and Esther deepens, although he’s a vampire/Methuselah and she’s a human and a nun. Although Father Abel Nightroad is referred to as a nano-machine, he turns out to be a sort of vampire’s vampire: A Methuselah who lives on the blood of other vampires–but who denies himself that nourishment. A new subplot begins in Episode #20, when Pope Alessandro XVIII and Esther travel to the Kingdom of Albion for the funeral of the Queen. Albion preserves much of the sophisticated technology that vanished from the rest of the world during the “Armageddon,” but it’s also troubled by human-vampire conflicts. It will be interesting to see if and how the filmmakers tie all these frayed storylines into anything approaching a real conclusion. Michael Winterbottom’s amazing In This World is a docudrama that reportedly re-creates the harrowing journey of two young Afghan males smuggled, one step at a time, from a long-established refugee camp in Pakistan across central Asia to their London destination. Shot with remarkable fluidity and narrative thoroughness in what appears many times to be dangerous situations with border guards and untrustworthy handlers (in Iran, Istanbul, Turkey, and France), In This World is anchored by non-actors Jamal Udin Torabi and Enayatullah, playing characters of the same names. The rapid pace and frequent fade-outs in this 88-minute film paradoxically force one’s imagination to underscore the agonizing slowness and anxiety of the young men’s trip, a technique that becomes nightmarish when Jamal and Enayat are locked for days, with other refugees, inside a ship’s container. Winterbottom (24-Hour Party People) and his characteristically protean style maintain remarkable inventiveness throughout. –Tom Keogh

Personally, I thought Abdul Ahmad was incredible, but wasn’t too impressed with Chaman Ali.

A wicked ice princess sets out to freeze and capture Earth for her planetary collection. But Sailor Moon and her tight-knit group of gal pals will have nothing of the sort. Paced more for the love story fan, this episode focuses on a handsome young astronomer, Kakeru, who discovers a mysterious crystal needed by Princess Snow Kaguya to carry out her plan. Soon after finding the crystal, Kakeru develops a deep friendship with Luna (Sailor Moon’s cat), a friendship that eventually leads to the Sailors’ discovery of the Earth’s predicament and to each character’s discovery of the tremendous powers of love and justice–all in about an hour.

Despite its slower pace, this feature incorporates all the positive qualities other Sailor Moon episodes share: sharp, eye-catching artwork; humorous but heartfelt communication among the girls; an understandable plot line; and plenty of flashy transforming. Further enhancements include an intelligent soundtrack (a nice balance of kooky sci-fi and seriously beautiful tunes) and the introduction of the “Outer Senshi.” This slightly older, more mature group of young women–Sailors Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto–join our regular band of bubble-spraying, crescent-beaming skirt tossers to melt the ice princess once and for all. The dubbed movie (tagged with the new title of Hearts in Ice) is an edited version of the subtitled film. Some language and violence (a few frames) have been altered. Due to the inclusion of mild nudity (imagine a spinning, naked Barbie), parents may want to think twice before offering this movie to fans younger than 6. The DVD is of the uncut version but also has the English language dialogue. –Liane Thomas
